1. November 12, 2008 - Attracting and retaining new clients in the new market
Getting ready for Broad Street as a Tourist destination

Welcome Remarks:

Silvia Acevedo, on behalf of Broad Street Providence merchants

  • Concept: In this workshop merchants will learn why effective marketing is important to reach out to this new segment of the market. The following questions will be answered: What is marketing? Why do I need a plan? Why do I need a mission statement? What is a competitive advantage?

  • Objectives: merchants will understand the needs and expectations of the new consumers. Each participant will receive an outline to make their marketing plan and clear steps to follow and evaluate their own plan.

2. December 3, 2008 - Public relations and service quality

  • Concept: merchants will understand the benefits of building a good image for their businesses through effective communication (with internal and external clients). They will obtain simple techniques that will help them to improve their business image as well as benefit them from leveraging their relationships. They will understand that having a positive attitude not only multiplied their clients and income, but also turn them into happier and prosperous individuals.

    - Improving attitudes and habits to generate satisfied clients.

3. December 17, 2008 - Connecting your business to the world.

  • Concept: In this workshop the merchants will learn why is so important to have presence in the web. They will understand how the Internet works and how they can market their business local or international without expending a lot of money. There will be some testimonies of retailers who have benefited from the trade in the Internet.

4. January 14, 2009 - How to make more money in your business
(By accepting different ways of payment).

  • Concept: The merchants will understand the advantages to accept different ways of payment; such as credit and debit cards, and how to do it effectively. They will also understand the importance of establishing, and developing a good relation with their bank. Finally we will discuss other ways in which they can save money by delegating certain responsibilities to the professionals.

  • Instructor: Nicole Gomes, Regional Manager Bank of America

  • Special guests: Credit Card Processing Professionals

5. January 28th, 2009 - Tourism 101

  • Concept: The merchants will understand the definition of tourism, and how the broad street will become a Tourist destination. They will also learn how they can engage and become successful in this process.

  • Instructor: Bob Billington, Blackstone Visitor Center
