Tri-community improvement plans solidify
for Broad Street
Earlier this year, Central Falls resident
Roberto Garcia attended a meeting at which municipal officials
talked about developing a plan for a renewed Broad Street, the
throughway where he owns a health foods store, Tesana. He
was alarmed. “I wasn’t sure it was a good project,” he says.
Garcia and other business owners feared that the local
governments were looking to push out independent stores in favor
of larger chains and big box stores, like Wal-Mart and CVS. He
now believes that what he feared could not be farther from the
truth.

Meeting set on Broad Street revitalization
plan
A plan to revitalize Broad Street calls for a slew of new
initiatives to stimulate business growth, encourage youth
involvement, and enhance safety along the commercial and
residential throughway, which links the downtown areas of
Pawtucket, Central Falls and Cumberland. The Broad Street
Regeneration Initiative’s action plan, which was about seven
months in the making, will be unveiled at a community meeting at
the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center, located at 175 Main St.,
in Pawtucket, on Tuesday.

Broad.

A Future Born from Latino
Roots
CENTRAL FALLS — To see where some of the newest
Latin-American and Hispanic-owned businesses are putting down
roots, take Exit 30 off Route 95 into Central Falls and make
your way to Broad Street. Then head north toward Cumberland. On both sides of the street, in a radius of no more than five
city blocks, a dozen new businesses have opened in the past
year, all owned by recent immigrants.
A former Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant reopened late last
month as Fiesta Meat and Deli, a meat market serving cuts
favored by most Latin Americans. There’s a barber shop owned by a 24-year-old Puerto Rican
immigrant. There is also a Dominican restaurant, a Colombian
restaurant, and a Mexican taqueria.
The latest? Two boutiques specializing in the vaquera, or
cowboy, fashions popular in rural Mexico and Central America
that opened this year. What unites the varied operations is that they all seek to
cater to the tastes of the city’s increasingly diversified
Latino population. Also, these new owners have made the distinct choice to open
up on Broad Street, a commercial throughway that is away from
Dexter Street, a hub of mom-and-pop Latino businesses, in order
to capitalize on an underserved section of the city.

Students talk about revitalizing Broad
Street
CENTRAL FALLS — The Florida college student
spearheading an effort to revitalize the Broad Street corridor
toured the area with local students Thursday, encouraging them
to get involved locally and support all things local. The
students, who were participants in the Blackstone Valley
Academy’s SPIRIT Program, were studying the concept of
“downtown” areas by experiencing them firsthand and interviewing
people who live and work there. The plan is for their writings
to eventually be published in book form, according to
information provided by the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council,
the group that has been leading efforts to economically
revitalize the neighborhood.

Blackstone Explorer offers a
cruise-food combo
Central Falls Landing buzzes with people on a recent July
evening. A group of about 28 is filing into the Blackstone
Valley Explorer, a canopied charter boat offering historical and
wildlife tours of the Blackstone River. There is a plate of
complimentary pastries and beverages, including malta, a
non-alcoholic drink made from barley and hops that has a sweet,
molasses taste. The dark drink piques the curiosity of just a
handful. The rest are wary.

The revitalization of a tri-town main
street
The white charter bus turned onto Barton Street, a
residential road across from the former train station that had
for decades been a notorious red-light district, rife with
prostitutes and drug dealers and addicts. The contingent of
state, federal and local officials –– directors, executives,
presidents and an assortment of other titles –– peered through
the bus windows. It was just before 2 p.m. yesterday.
